Calathea

Calathea's are apart of the "prayer plant" family. This nickname derives from the fact that the leaves will open and close mimicking a praying motion. Various plants in this family move their leaves up at nighttime and lower them in the daytime. It is believed that these movements are meant to follow the sun’s movement in the sky in order to maximize light absorption.

Light
These plants appreciate medium to bright indirect light, although can thrive in low light.

Soil
Airy, well-draining soil mixes are best.

Temperature & Humidity
Keep the temperature at 80 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit, and 60 degrees Fahrenheit during wintertime. High humidity is best. Placing these plants in a bathroom are ideal. Otherwise consider misting your plant every few days or supplying a humidity tray.

Water
Water every 1-2 weeks, allowing soil to dry out half way down between waterings.

Repotting
It is best to repot when the roots grow out of the drainage holes of its pot, or when the leaf span is double the width of the pot.
